FIGHT AGAINST NARCOTICS TRAFFICKING: More than 60 tons of counterfeit medicines incinerated by the OCS

A large-scale operation led by the Central Narcotics Office (OCS) and its regional branches resulted in the seizure of more than 60 tons of counterfeit pharmaceutical products in Dio-Gare in just ten days. With an estimated market value of several billion CFA francs, this seizure represents a major blow to criminal networks specializing in the trafficking of illicit medicines in Mali.
Given the scale of the seizure and the lack of adequate storage infrastructure, the authorities immediately incinerated the products this Thursday, October 16, in Dio-Gare, in the Kati district.
"Usually, we wait until the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, on June 26, to proceed with the destruction. But this time, urgency was essential,” declared Police Inspector General Bassirou BAMBA, Deputy Director General of the OCS.
He emphasized that this public destruction is part of a process of transparency and awareness: “We want the public to see the final destination of these seized products. It also sends a strong message against the trafficking of substances harmful to health.”
Dr. Abdoulaye GUINDO, representative of the Directorate of Pharmacy and Medicines, highlighted the health risks associated with the consumption of these counterfeit products: mental disorders, uncontrolled behavior, and serious risks to public health. He welcomed the initiative as a strong act of regulation and protection for citizens.
The OCS calls on young people to turn away from drug trafficking and consumption. “The future of the country rests with them. They must devote themselves to education and the development of the nation,” insisted Bassirou BAMBA. This operation marks a significant step forward in the fight against drug and counterfeit medicine trafficking in Mali, and sends a clear signal to traffickers: impunity is no longer an option.
