KAYES: 66th Independence Anniversary Celebrated with Popular Fervor

On September 22, 2026, the Governor of the Kayes region, Brigadier General Moussa Soumaré, presided over the ceremonies commemorating the 66th anniversary of Mali's independence. The event drew a large turnout, with the population gathering in great numbers to take part in the festivities.

The ceremony began with the laying of a wreath at the monument dedicated to the martyrs who fell victim to colonialism. Following this initial act, the Governor and his delegation proceeded to the Mamadou Lamine Dramé military camp, where the commemorative activities continued.
The civil and military parade was a highlight of the celebration. Various participants marched before the authorities and the public, lending the ceremony a strong patriotic and popular character.
During the ceremony, certificates of appreciation were awarded to several military officials and heads of regional services in recognition of their commitment and contribution to the region. Recently promoted military personnel also received their new rank insignia.

In his address, the Governor of the Kayes region highlighted the historical significance of September 22. According to Brigadier General Moussa Soumaré, this date marks the culmination of a long political, intellectual, and popular struggle led notably by Modibo Keïta and his associates.
Addressing the region's security and economic situation, the head of the regional administration noted that, earlier in the year, Kayes had faced intense security pressure targeting supply routes and economic activities. He stated that the aim was to disrupt supply flows and undermine economic activity. In light of this situation, the Governor commended the resilience of the population and the determination of business leaders. He highlighted that, despite the challenges, socio-economic activities have continued across various sectors.
General Moussa Soumaré attributed these results, in part, to the work of the Malian Armed Forces (FAMa). He expressed his gratitude to the region's military authorities—specifically the Commander of the Tactical Command Post and the Commander of Sector 7 of Operation Dougoukoloko—for their efforts to secure the region.
The Governor also acknowledged the efforts of senior leadership to strengthen the operational capabilities of the FAMa. Special tribute was paid to the late Army General Sadio Camara for his role in the process of rebuilding the nation's defense apparatus.

Finally, Brigadier General Moussa Soumaré urged the people of Kayes to maintain their commitment to nation-building.
Strong public turnout, along with civilian and military parades, marked the celebration of the 66th anniversary of Mali's independence in the Kayes region.
